Determining whether or not your child needs tutoring can be difficult. Parents often struggle with the decision because they do not yet understand learning differences and they do not realize how common they are among adolescents.

The most up-to-date reading research concludes that early intervention is the most effective remedy for childhood learning difficulty. The sooner you can recognize an issue with your child’s learning and then address that issue with tutoring, the better chance you have of resolving the issue.

Below are some common red flags to help parents recognize an issue with their child’ s learning that RISE can help address:

Reading Comprehension

Reading comprehension is paramount to your child’s development and it is important to recognize and address difficulty early in their education.

Common reading comprehension red flags among students:

  • Reading is slow and labored, has a choppy cadence, and will often ignore punctuation
  • Reads well but struggles with comprehension
  • Is unable to break words into syllable types
  • Inserts, omits, reverses, and transposes sounds in words while reading and spelling
  • Recognizes a word on one page but not the next time they see it
  • Cannot read a word without memorizing it

Writing

There are many cognitive processes involved in writing and students often struggle if there is a gap present in one of those processes.

Common red flags for writing among students:

  • Speaks easily about a topic but struggles to write about it
  • Has difficulty with the main parts of speech (nouns, verbs, prepositions, etc.)
  • Commits major misspellings, often phonetically at best
  • Struggles to understand and employ punctuation, grammar, and syntax
  • Has poor sentence and paragraph structure
  • Has a hard time taking notes and summaries
  • Has difficulty organizing thoughts on a page

Math

Math is a scientific form of language. If a student struggles in one area, then they often find it difficult to advance because the concept they failed to grasp is applied in the next level.

Common math red flags among students:

  • Simple time concepts like “half-past twelve”
  • Reversing the order of steps to solve problems
  • Has difficulty memorizing multiplication tables
  • Often omits steps when solving a problem
  • Has trouble remembering correct steps
  • Forgets what they recently learned

Organization and Study Skills

Learning good organization and study skills is the key to a student’s success. At RISE, your student will learn techniques that fit their unique learning style and that will help them overcome their learning differences.

Common organization and study skills red flags among students:

  • Waits until the last minute to begin assignments
  • Cannot seem to get homework started and completed
  • Homework takes longer that it should
  • Crams work into bookbag and has trouble finding assignments later
  • Regularly forgets books, homework, and materials needed for completing assignments

If you suspect that your child is having trouble with any of the areas listed above, please call RISE Learning today to schedule a consultation.
